8Tuner 3.5.1

(Shareware)

843 K

8Tuner is an application that modifies certain resources in your System and Finder to change the appearances and functionalities of your Mac OS 8. Since all changes are modified directly in your system software, the changes do not require extra system memory to function. While it bills itself as a "tuner" for System 8, 8Tuner allows the user to specify a range of option preferences in the OS. With 8Tuner you can set what your default folder looks like, whether or not new aliases come with the suffix "alias", and a whole host of other useful utilities you never knew you needed until now. If you're one of those Mac users who never stops fiddling with their setup, then 8Tuner is for you.

Mac OS 8 and a 68040 or PowerPC are required to run 8Tuner.

DarkSide 5.0.5

(Shareware)

698 K

DarkSide is an application (not a conflict causing extension) that serves as a screen saver. Screen savers are used to protect your Macintosh screen from burn in.

DarkSide is very nicely done, with a large number of modules built-in: fireworks, moire, playful kitten, etc. It supports Fade Now, Fade Never corners, and most AfterDark modules. Amazingly, it uses only 64K of RAM! It's a great piece of shareware and widely used.

DragThing 2.7

(Shareware)

2,408 K

DragThing is an application designed to tidy up the icons cluttering up your desktop and make your Mac time more productive. Though there are many file-launching palette utilities out there, this may be our favorite.

With DragThing, you can create any number of customizable "docks" and drag icons of files, folders, and applications onto them, making app-launching and drag-and-drop incredibly easy. (You can also create a dock that will always contain icons for all of your currently-running applications.) And with version 2.0, DragThing now lets you choose whether you'd like its docks to appear as normal Mac palettes or whether you'd like them to float above all other windows, a la HoverBar. In addition to files, folders and apps, DragThing also works with Internet Config to let you place URLs in docks -- a feature we came to find indispensable in helping us navigate around the net.

Two interface features are what really differentiate DragThing from the competition: first, you can "minimize" docks, shrinking them down to a tiny window until you click on them or drag a file over it -- which can be quite a screen-space saver. Second, you can add folder tabs to docks, letting you store even more icons per dock and save even more screen real estate. Registered users gain access to hot keys and floating docks.

Greg's Browser 2.5.5 (68k)

(Shareware)

If you need more file management power than the Finder gives you, check out this excellent file manager alternative. Greg's Browser is a well-designed file manager utility for the Mac that provides an alternative to the file management aspects of the Finder. Even lets you see invisible files. Find, move, copy, or delete files easily and quickly. You can also create new folders, change file labels, and edit file names.

If you have the Stuffit Engine (see DropStuff under Disk Tools)  you may freely browse the contents of StuffIt and Compact Pro archives, and you can stuff files by dragging them into a StuffIt archive in Browser's window. If you have the Macintosh Drag and Drop extension, you can also unstuff files by dragging them out of archives.

If you are coming to the Mac from Windows, you'll find Greg's Browser similar to the File Manager, but a lot faster and more fun to use. From the author of the popular extension, Greg's Buttons.

Lupe FAT

(Freeware)

19 K

Lupe is a desktop magnifier for your desktop. Simply hold your mouse over what you want to magnify, and the Lupe window displays a magnified view of it. There are several magnifications to choose from, and you can even save a snapshot of the magnified area to the clipboard. A very handy utility, and free to boot!

May require OS 8.1 or higher

PandoCalendar

(Freeware)

613 K

PandoCalendar is a small program that places a calendar on your desktop. You can customize the calendar by changing the frame, background color, text color, font, and font size (see screen shot). The size of the font determines the height and width of the calendar window. You can also attach notes to specific days for past or future events, and have PandoCalendar automatically plot the days you work.

Requires OS 7.5+

PrintCalendar

(Freeware)

224 K

PrintCalendar is a no-frills freeware application that can display and print monthly calendar pages. It also can add user-defined events and their descriptions to specific days and include major holidays. This program is best suited for people interested in printing out disposable monthly calendars in which they can pencil in dates and events on a hard copy. Though this program is neither pretty nor powerful, it definitely gets the job done--and it's free. Version 1.2 has fixed the calculation of Ascension Day, added Pentecost, and features fixes for other, minor bugs.

Relax

(Freeware)

Relax creates an ambient "environment" or soundscape which you can listen to while you work on your Mac, or just to play through your Mac while you do other things. It's a simple little app, but it does what it says it does. The environment it ships with "Forest Stream" is nice, with the trickle of a babbling brook and birds chirping. New age? Maybe, but worth the download to try out. You can even create your own Environments with the included editor. There are other applications like Relax, but it is at the top of its class in simplicity and elegance.

ScrapIt Pro FAT 5.4.4

(Shareware)

973 K

ScrapIt Pro is an enhanced version of the Scrapbook and Note Pad desk accessories which come with every Macintosh. When you first open ScrapIt Pro, the most apparent difference is that in one window, divided into two parts, you are shown both a list of the contents of the Scrapbook file as well as the actual contents, and at the top of the window is a toolbar which gives you one-click access to almost all the program's functions. But that's only one of ScrapIt Pro's possible views. And while there are many functions, ScrapIt Pro's interface is very slick and easy to grasp.

One of the my favorite functions is the ability to print a list of thumbnails of a Scrapbook's contents, but ScrapIt Pro can do much more. Here's a list of some of ScrapIt Pro's abilities:

It can import and export QuickTime movies, TEXT, PICT, PICT resources, MacPaint and 'snd ' files and resources (several files may also be imported at one time)
Names may be added to each item in the scrapbook file
Text items (including styles) may be edited and searched
It will record and play sounds
It can print text or pictures
Multiple scrap files are supported and may be open at one time
Items may be added through drag-and-drop either from other scrapbook files or from other drag-and-drop aware applications (for System 7.5 users only)
Alias awareness (so the scrapbook file can be stored on a different disk)
Speech Manager support

ScrapIt Pro can open up to 20 files. And ScrapIt Pro files may have up to 1,000 items, although original Scrapbook files are still limited to 255 items. If you keep a lot of graphics why not use ScrapIt Pro to keep multiple files based on topic, much like more expensive image cataloging software?

The overall look is pleasing. The user can change the color of the background if s/he so chooses. ScrapIt Pro comes with a very explicit help document, access to online help through the Apple Menu and Balloon Help. To complete the package, there's even a utility which will convert SmartScrap or Apple Scrapbook files into files which may be opened with ScrapIt Pro just by double clicking.
