Online and Internet Tools

Anarchie 3.7

(Shareware)

1,484 K

Anarchie is an application that lets you download and upload files via the File Transfer Protocol, or FTP, over the Internet. Opening a directory on a remote FTP server -- whether it's a Mac, UNIX machine, or a PC -- brings up a window remarkably similar to the ones you'd see in the Finder. You can drag files and folders between Anarchie windows and the desktop for quick uploads and downloads. Dragging files from an Anarchie window to the Trash will delete them from the remote server, just as if that server was your own hard drive.

Anarchie, which is compatible with both MacTCP and Open Transport, also lets you do a "Mac file search" -- meaning you can quickly search for Mac software on the Net. It also supports the Archie protocol for Net file searches, requires Internet Config (included as part of the archive), and is AppleScript/Frontier savvy. It's a powerful tool for anyone who transfers files over the Net.

AOL 2.7 68K

(Freeware)

America Online (AOL) is a communications service that provides users with access to both the Internet and special AOL content. It offers 19 channels of content and features, covering topics such as news and entertainment. Members can obtain up to seven email addresses per account, as well as 10MB personal home page space. With an AOL account, you can utilize a vast array of chat rooms, message boards, online stores, digital pictures, and AOL's My Calendar. Other features include online screening software, user profiles, and easy access to the Internet with AOL's own browser. The installation utility simplifies setup by locating local dial-up numbers, finding your modem, and configuring your software. AOL provides hundreds of widespread dial-up numbers, many of which offer speeds of 56 kbps. Standard accounts cost $21.95 for unlimited access. Less expensive accounts may be acquired, but charge per hour after a time limit has been reached.

AOL's incredibly easy setup and large quantity of homegrown content make it a great choice for anyone new to computers or the Internet. However, certain aspects of the service, such as pop-up advertisements, may be annoying to some. If you are experienced with computing and the Internet, you may want to consider a more straightforward ISP. (AOL Sucks IMO)

Auction Action Tracker

(Shareware)

888 K

Auction Action Tracker lets you check the status of your eBay auctions without having to use your web-browser. You simply add item numbers to its listing of auctions, and it will automatically track the progress of the auctions. The Auto Load option automatically tracks your current auctions, and adds ones you've bid on in eBay to the list. You can specify how often to update the listing, up to "continuously reload," so that you don't miss out on the action during the last few hours of an auction, when most of the action takes place. You can even bid through AAT. If you're an eBay junkie, or just want to keep track of several auctions at once, check out Auction Action Tracker.

Fetch

(Shareware)

Fetch is a Macintosh-based FTP client. It can be used to send and receive files from various network hosts which support the TCP/IP File Transfer Protocol. With the upgrade to version 3.0.2, it becomes the first FTP client to allow users to continue a download following a broken connection.

Version 3.0.2 fixes bugs, adds the "Resume Download" command to continue partially-completed transfers, adds a transfer buffer size preference, improves Open Transport connect error reporting, adds support for Netware 4.x servers, and makes many other improvements. Version 3.0.3 fixes problems with sorting and with the View File command.

FirstClass Client 3.5 Fat

(Shareware)

FirstClass Client is a graphical telecommunications program that lets you connect with FirstClass BBSes, which are becoming increasingly popular because of their superb Mac-like graphical interface. If you don't have access to a FirstClass service, this file is of no use to you. There are no docs, but click the Setup button in the Connect window, click Change, and plug in the number of any FirstClass BBS. Click the Login button and you're off!

Version 3.5 adds a spelling checker, a Toolbar and Status Bar, new cross-platform styled editor, client extension support, drag and drop, drag and drill, New Directory and addressing support (when used against appropriate FirstClass Server), FirstClass Personal ready, online updating of settings file, proxy support, a 3D look, and more.

FreePPP

(Freeware)

FreePPP allows you to establish a TCP/IP connection over an asynchronous serial line (e.g., a telephone modem connection) using the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). What's the benefit of this? Well, if you have access to a PPP-smart server that connects to the Internet, then you can use MacTCP-dependent services such as telnet, FTP and the World-Wide Web (WWW). Some of the TCP/IP programs usable with a direct Internet connection include Fetch, Mosaic and NCSA Telnet.

You may have heard of SLIP, which is another protocol used to create a similar connection to a server on the Internet. NOTE: You must be able to connect to a PPP-capable terminal server to use this extension/control panel combination.

HotLine Client 1.2.3 68K

(Freeware)

When used with the Hotline server, this client allows users to chat, transfer files, and read news on an Internet/intranet-like service. However, Hotline Connect Client should not be confused with a client that performs FTP, IRC, or NNTP functions, as these are not supported by Hotline. This download is a client designed for the Mac OS to help users take advantage of offerings that are not typically provided by Unix servers.

Version 2.5.3 fixes a bug with versions 2.5.1 (which shipped with the Apple Internet Connection Kit) and version 2.5.2 (which is available as an update) that prevented a PPP connection from being established when using a connection script. MacPPP is not compatible with Open Transport, and you will need to obtain Disk Copy 6.1 or later to open this file.
