Sound Utilities

PlayerPro 5.5

(Shareware)

Player PRO is perhaps the most complete shareware package available for computer-based music editing. At its most base, it functions well as a player of MOD, S3M, Midi, MTM, MADx, OKTA, snd, WAV, AIFF, AIFC, MED and XM, but it goes well beyond playing and offers authoring, editing, and -- perhaps most importantly -- translation capabilities for various sound formats.

There is no "main screen:" rather, functions are handled in a series of smaller screens which are so numerous that you have to be careful not to let them overrun even a 19" screen. A good idea of the program's capabilities can be culled from a listing of the control windows available. They include: instrument viewer, track viewer, "adaptors" window (which controls pitch, speed, and volume for all 32 tracks), patterns list, oscilloscope, piano and more.

So whether you want to play various sound files, create them, or edit them, Player PRO is for you: with extreme flexibility and control, this is one program you're not going to outgrow very soon.

As many of the windows rely on color to convey information, a color monitor is recommended. System 7.5 or later is also recommended for best use.

A French language version is also.

NOTE: until you register, editing and some other capabilities are disabled, and it will quit after playing 20 minutes worth of music.

QuickTime 4.0.3

 (Freeware)

QuickTime is Apple's video technology that allows you to play high-quality video directly on your computer. QuickTime is a set of extensions that, when used with movie software, lets you view video clips or even full-length video productions. Features introduced in QuickTime 4.0 include new audio controls for balance, volume, bass, and treble; ImageViewer support for BMP, GIF, JPEG, PICT, PNG, SGI, TIFF, Adobe PhotoShop, and FlashPix; compression support for MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) files, Sorenson Video, QDesign Music, Qualcomm PureVoice, H.261, GSM, and DVI; video support for AVI, DV, Macromedia Flash, OpenDML, GIF, and FLC; and more. Version 4.0.2 updates the QuickTime essentials and QuickTime FireWire DV components. The download link will lead you to a form.

Note: This download uses a "smart" installer; after downloading the small installer file to your desktop, you can choose between a Basic and a Deluxe QuickTime installation. The Basic installation file size is 2MB and the Deluxe installation file size is 2.7MB.

SoundApp 2.6.1 FAT

(Freeware)

SoundApp is a great little utility which will play sound files in different formats and will convert the files to the supported formats. SoundApp can read AIFF, AIFF-C, Amiga IFF, MOD, DVI ADPCM, IRCAM, MPEG audio, QuickTime (including MIDI), NeXT, PSION, SoundCap, Sound Designer II, SoundEdit, Sun Audio, System 7 Sound, SoundBlaster VOC, Windows WAVE, audio CD, and any 'snd' resource file. SoundEdit can convert most of these formats to System 7 Sound, sound suitcase, QuickTime, AIFF, WAVE and NeXT formats, and many others.

Dropping sound files on SoundApp will either play them, convert them to the preferred format, or add them to a play list. If you drop a folder of sounds instead, SoundApp will search through the folder and perform the specified action on all sounds in the folder (even those nested in other folders). Several keys control playback and navigation. Build a play list to save the file references for future use. SoundApp supports the Macintosh Drag Manager (available in System 7.5); you build play lists by dragging files from the desktop to your play list window. For those without System 7.5, you can add files to the play list by either dropping them, as described above, or choosing open in the file menu while a play list is open. With version 2.0, SoundApp allows you to open multiple play lists. SoundApp also supports AppleScript.

SoundApp's ease of use makes it a great tool for pros and beginners.

SoundEffects 0.9.2

(Shareware)

SoundEffects, even in this slightly unfinished form, is an extraordinary application for manipulating Mac sounds. Its capability of applying many digital effects to recorded sounds is its main strength, and the architecture of the program enhances this value even further: the effects are plug-in modules which allow users to expand the program by simply adding new modules as they become available. Not only can SoundEffects change sounds in many ways through its variety of effects, but it also handles multi-channel sounds, sampled at any rate up to 64kHz and with any sample size between 1 and 32 bits. Recording rate and sample size are limited only by your Mac or your sound input device.

Despite the plethora of effects included, the program could have a few more added and a few features in the menus have yet to be finished.

The author promises an update soon which will, among other things, enable the undo command -- a real boon for people who wish to experiment. Once these additions are completed in version 1.0 this program will clearly be a 5 rating.
