3-D Brick Bash(Shareware)151 K |
3-D Brick Bash is a fantastic
implementation of the classic Break Out style game. For lovers of the
original, you will be thrilled with this excellent fast-paced, colorful,
fun-filled game. As a ball drops from the top of the screen you manipulate your paddle in a 3-D environment watching the shadow of the ball to insure that you line up the paddle properly. As the game progresses, different obstacles appear to wreak havoc on your playing field. Although the movement of the paddle is at times jerky, playing is not impaired by this slight shortcoming of the game. A must for any user out there who misses the good old days of simple, straightforward arcade games. |
Apeiron(Shareware) |
Apeiron
is the latest contribution from Ambrosia's
resident Macintosh wizard, Andrew Welch, to Ambrosia's growing
entertainment collection. In a four Apple review, Mac Home Journal says:
"...if you like fast paced arcade action, you're going to want
this."
During a port through the looking glass, the mirror shatters and your ethereal energy (you know, the stuff that allows you to get up and go to work on a Monday morning...) is trapped within one of the crystal shards. Immediately, the residents of the mushroom patch sense your presence. Lead by the Pentipede, this motley crew of mushroom patch misfits relentlessly hunt the crystal ( You! ), intent upon sucking out the trapped energy. The Pentipede is a sinister creature that has the ability to divide. So, if you think your troubles are over when you shoot this sneakered psycho once, you are twice as wrong. The Pentipede is joined by a ruthless assortment of animated killers, and your situation is further complicated by a few unpleasant "environmental" hazards. Luckily you are not defenseless; with plasma cannon blazing, you must hold out as long as possible. Shooting certain mushrooms can be very beneficial to your mission. Several power up coins are scattered throughout the garden. Find one of these and you can teach the Pentipede and his pals the meaning of "full auto." Inside Mac Games sums it up by saying "Apeiron's astounding graphics and sound coupled with its captivating gameplay make it a joy to play and a worthy successor to a classic such as Maelstrom." I've flipped this game twice in the same game. In other words I got to level 100 which puts you back to level one again - twice. I finally had to go to sleep and quit at level 212! This game sucks if you hate having fun. Warning: Very Addictive. |
Asterax(Shareware) |
Asterax
is a single- or multi-player arcade game, growing out of the classic
arcade game Asteroids, but with new strategic elements. Choose one of
three different starting ships, and mine the asteroid belt by blowing up
the drifting asteroids and scooping up the emeraldium crystals and
shield-energy crystals that issue forth. Stay on your toes, because every
now and then an alien warship comes by just to cause some trouble. Your
shields come up automatically whenever needed, for as long as they last
(keep grabbing those shield crystals!). After every level is completed,
you get to go shopping for enhancements for your ship (with retrieved
emeraldium crystals as currency); new weapons, shields, engines and
special options keep the game different every time. The graphics support is wonderfully flexible. Play in 16 or 256 colors, and choose from screen sizes from Classic II-sized to 21" monitors. |
ChessWorks(Freeware)923 K |
ChessWorks is an Internet-savvy
chess program where you can play a game of chess against a friend on the
Internet. Just enter both your IP addresses and play away.
ChessWorks is a well-designed program, but it lacks a few simple features, like the ability to announce checkmates. Also, a tracking feature where you could broadcast that you're looking for a game on the net would be a nice feature. In this age of inter-connected apps and websites, demand for such functionality is going to be increase, in this editor's opinion. Aside from that, ChessWorks is a clean, very functional Chess program, and it's free, to boot. Can't beat that. |
Crop Circles(Demo)9,527K |
Crop Circles puts you in the
driver's seat of a cow-powered flying saucer, out to suck energy from crop
circles. This hilarious game pits you against your dwindling fuel supply,
irate farmers with shotguns, and, eventually, government agents. You
refuel your saucer by converting cows into fuel, but watch out for the
ones with Mad Cow disease, as they're not good for fuel. Converting bulls
will give your saucer special powers, such as the ability to look like a
harmless weather balloon.
A great game, and well worth the download. This demo version contains the first few levels of the game. Requires System 7.5 or greater. |
Crystal Crazy(Demo) |
This
is a Casady
& Greene demo that will make you go out and buy the full version! My friends
wouldn't let me on my Mac cause they just had to play some more. And there
were at least 6 of them that fought over who's playing next ... honest! I
couldn't wait to have them all go home so I had this game all to myself.
8^)
Look--up in the sky! It's Space Cow! What's she doing up there, you ask? Well, she's collecting crystals, solving jigsaw puzzles, smashing fragile ornaments, and sinking pool balls. And she's doing all this while dodging and shooting at intergalactic space bunnies and the dreaded Zinkelflashoxicationizers. In addition to fast-moving game play, Crystal Crazy sports some, ahem, interesting sound effects, as well. Zoom about collecting crystals and smart bombs, uncovering pictures, smashing objects and avoiding the baddies in this fast paced arcade game. This demo lets you play several levels before you run out of time or 9 levels, and then will start you right over a level 1 again. |
Cyclone1.21(Shareware)1,323K |
Cyclone is a Macintosh version of the old arcade classic Star Castle. Your objective is to destroy the enemy base, which is guarded by three layers of shields, while avoiding guided mines and blasts from the base's terrible plasma cannon. Pick up "yummies" along the way for extra fire power and shields. I love this game! Try to beat my high score of 93,882 (level 7). |
Deathground(Demo)19,932 K |
Freeverse software hits another
one out of the park with Deathground, their addicting and goofy take on
the Mob wars that raged through New York in the 1930s. You control your
gang as you try and take New York City neighborhood by neighborhood from
your enemies.
Silly faces (some of them the Freeverse staff), voices, and campy action take the edge off the violence, making this a great game for older kids and adults alike. The play is strategic, where you allocate "guys" to your holdings, trying to guess where the enemy will strike next, and where you'll need the soldiers to do your own hits. Watch your gang take over Manhattan, only to get slaughtered in the Outer Boroughs. Deathground is sure to be a hit with all fans of Goodfellas and the Godfather movies. Enjoy, and don't wind up sleeping with the fishes! |
Doom 1.01(Demo) |
I've never heard of this program. :) |
Escape Velocity 1.0.5(Shareware) |
Check your calendar: It's 2246, and the
galaxy just isn't what it used to be. Spacefaring pirates roam free, civil
war rages, and simple traders cheat death to make a living. Welcome to
life in the 23rd century!
Ambrosia software's Escape Velocity puts you smack-dab in the middle of that booming galaxy. As the captain of a shiny new spacecraft, you make your fortune and build your empire. If that sounds like a walk in the park, you're in for a surprise - dangers abound! Your lowly shuttle craft will need more than a little luck to make a profit... and survive. Lovingly hand-crafted by programmer Matt Burch, Escape Velocity offers a rich and open-ended environment that evolves as you play. Over a hundred worlds occupy the galaxy, each with its own technology, alliances, and commodities. As you earn credits and gain fame, Confederation peace keepers and Rebel patriots struggle for power, leaving you in the middle. Escape Velocity spans a number of genres, combining elements of classic "trading" games, arcade space shoot-outs, and strategy simulations. Whether you choose to build a trading empire, aid the Rebellion in a civil war, or strike out on your own as a ruthless pirate, Escape Velocity provides a multitude of options for the game connoisseur. This open-ended gameplay allows each player to chart their own course as they play; there's no "right" way to play Escape Velocity, as long as you have fun! Numerous sub-plots fill Escape Velocity's world; your choices affect the story's development, guaranteeing that each game will be different from the last. You'll have the opportunity to infiltrate hostile military bases, ferry emergency supplies to distant star systems, rescue passengers from stranded cruise ships, stop alien invaders, and more. In addition, Escape Velocity sports an open game engine. Future scenario designers will be able to create their own worlds for other players to explore... Escape Velocity runs on any Mac with a 640x480 color monitor and 5.8 megabytes of free RAM. Optimized for the PowerMac, it's lickety-split smooth on Apple's latest iron. And of course, Escape Velocity has the dazzling 3D rendered graphics, full stereo sound, and all the polish that you'd expect of an Ambrosia game. This software was suggested by Craig Dean. |
Maelstrom(Shareware)1226 K |
This Macintosh
classic is what put Ambrosia on the map as the leading Macintosh shareware
publisher. Maelstrom
has received a four
star rating from Macworld, the MacUser 1993 Best Shareware Game award, and
the Shareware Industry Award for best game. Maelstrom also took first
place in the 1994 Mac Home Journal Reader's Choice Awards.
The dreaded Maelstrom is a dangerous asteroid belt within which you must skillfully pilot your spacecraft. Animated space debris races toward you from all points of the compass. All that you have to protect you are your shields, razor-sharp reflexes, and an itchy trigger finger. You must blast the asteroids before they crush your tiny ship like a tin can. Use your shield for close calls, but be sure to spend your shield energy wisely; you will always need it later. You also must defend yourself from evil Shenobi fighters that weave their way through the asteroids. These tough little fighters will fight you toe-to-toe - don't let their size fool you. Luckily, during your travels you will encounter a variety of objects that will help with your mission. First aid cannisters can give you alternate weapon systems, more shield energy, or better manuever-ability. Having your plasma cannon set on full auto can really pull you out of a tight spot or two. With detailed color animation, four channels of digital sound, and smooth game play, Maelstrom takes full advantage of the Macintosh's multi-media capabilities. All the game needs is someone with guts and a thirst for glory in the pilot's seat. This is another game that made me and my Mac popular with my friends (not that I needed help). |
