Macintosh Games N - Z

QuickShot Deluxe 2.0

(Demo)

19,241 K

This is a classic aim-and-shoot game. The author didn't set up any particular story line, but basically, you must protect your life by killing bad guys before they shoot you dead. Use your mouse to aim and fire at your enemies as they come out of their hiding places. The goal is to be as quick and accurate as possible.

Each level takes place in a different environment and varies in difficulty. Additional ammo and extra life bonuses appear randomly throughout the game. The game play is fairly easy, but the real life animations and background images make it worth the while.

Note: Requires a 68040 or better processor.

Snood 2.1

(Shareware)

Snood is a fun puzzle game that will test your intellect rather than your reflexes. Your goal is to free all of the trapped Snoods by launching other Snoods at them. If you connect three or more Snoods, they will transport away. If that leaves any Snoods not connected to the top of the playfield, they will fall to safety. Don't take too long, though. Every Snood you launch increases the Danger Level. When the gauge fills up, the Snoods will shift downward. If the Snoods reach you, the game is over. Snood includes the following features:
Set your own pace! There is no time limit in Snood, so you can play as quickly or as patiently as you wish.
Simple controls! You only need the mouse to play. Move it left and right to aim your launcher, and click to launch your Snood.
Multiple difficulty settings! Pick the level that suits your skill, from Child to Evil, or try the Puzzle or Journey levels.
Registered users can even design their own custom difficulty settings and puzzles. Each difficulty level maintains its own high score list and statistics, too.
On the Mac, Snood is background-friendly! You can play Snood as a break while you work or while printing, and background functions on your Mac will still operate.

Special note for parents: Snood is a good game for children. The game is non-violent and non-confrontational, and children can play at their own pace. It develops several basic skills, including matching, calculation of angles, and simple strategic assessment and problem solving. It does not require reading, and the controls are very simple. The Child difficulty level is easy enough even for young children to enjoy (ages 2-3).

Space Junkie

(Shareware)

Space Junkie is a color arcade game based on the classic game Galaxian. It features colorful graphics, fast and smooth animation, and arcade-like sounds. A fun game packed into a remarkably small size makes for a quick and enjoyable download.

Swoop

(Shareware)

3646 K

Developed by David Wareing, of Adelaide, Australia, Swoop is an arcade classic combining pulse-quickening game play with state of the art computer animation and audio effects. Smooth flowing action, detailed full color graphics, and custom sound effects all provide for exciting game play. The only thing missing is the cash box in which to pump your coins.

Since the dawn of time, good people have always fought the iron glove of oppression. Never before has the fight been so desperate; never before have the stakes been so high. This time the fight is not over politics, religion, or territory. For now, the very survival of the human race hangs in the balance. The Swoopers have come.

The Swoopers - a sinister race of aliens from a distant quadrant of another galaxy - have targeted earth for destruction. Alien agents have disabled the Earth's sophisticated defense systems, leaving the home planet virtually unprotected. The only thing that stands between the hungry Swooper legions and their goal is you and your trusty George Pal class fighter ship. Alone, against all odds, you must fight off the invading horde.

Although the situation is desperate, you are well prepared for the challenge. An experienced veteran of the Shenobi Wars in the distant Maelstrom system, you have already proven your skills as a warrior. The George Pal fighter is a well-equipped weapons platform, having a variety of offensive and defensive systems that can be activated. Although your ship is capable, you must rely more on your skill, courage, and perseverance to fight off the host of Swoopers.

1000% better than Space Invaders!

Tetris Max

(Shareware)

Tetris Max is a high-quality implementation of a Tetris-style game. It features cool-looking 256-color artwork, an original music soundtrack that plays while the game is in progress, and fun sound effects. Tetris Max runs on any Mac in black and white or color, under system 6 or 7. It's a stunning, exciting game! Honorably mentioned in the 1993 MacUser Shareware Awards.

Wolfenstein 3D

(Shareware)

1873 K

Wolfenstein 3D, in case you haven't been paying attention, is id software's classic DOS first-person perspective run-around and shoot the heck out of the bad guys action game. MacPlay has ported it over to the Macintosh (using the 4x higher quality Jaguar graphics) in all its blazing glory.

In this game you are Captain William J. B.J. Blazkowicz, and you must escape your prison, Castle Wolfenstein, and recover the secret Nazi plans on the way out. Lots of running around with guns blazing. Find treasure along the way for extra points, and medical kits for healing.

Frames per second is high, even on a IIci (what MacPlay suggests as the minimum speed cpu) with extensions off and background music turned off. If you have a Power Mac, watch out! This game is a fat binary, and the whole code is replicated for PowerPC speed. You can set four levels of difficulty, and four different screen sizes (320x200, 512x384, 640x400, 640x480) to match your and your computer's game-playing abilities. Play is with the keyboard, and a Gravis GamePad set is included for those with this hardware input alternative. Although 2200K of free RAM is minimum, for all the sounds and music you better have 6000K free. If you run with minimum extensions, be sure to keep Sound Manager 3.0 active to smooth out the sound.

This shareware demo (the First Encounter) contains the first three levels of the game. After registering, you are sent the next 27 levels of mayhem (the Second Encounter). There will also be separately available another 60 levels for a full 90 levels of game play. If you have trouble exiting any screen try and use the space bar to continue, and mouse users who need to make changes to menu items should press the COMMAND-M sequence to regain use of the mouse.
